“Hey Creative, look at this. autumn must be here” yells Curious.
“I can see that”, said Creative .”What a beautiful tree. Aren’t the kids at St Joseph’s lucky to have such a beautiful tree in their playground?”
“I know its autumn because the leaves on this tree are all scarlet and crunchy.” says Curious as he climbs higher into the tree.
“My favourite autumn pastime is to cover myself in leaves and pretend I’m a hedgehog,” squeals Creative.
“Come on lets” laughs Curious as he jumps down from the glorious scarlet tree.

Dear Curious and Creative,
ReplyDeleteDid you know that the leave colours red, yellow & brown are in the leaves all year long & only become exposed when the green chlorophyll disappears in the autumn!!! And also the hedgehog is native to England, Africa, Europe and Asia, but is not found in North America other than as a domestic pet!! Maybe Room 8 could adopt a hedgehog for the winter!!
Have fun crunching through the leaves!!
I must say that the tree the George Brothers sat in is one of my favourite autumn trees in the playground as well. From Mrs Wise
ReplyDeleteDear Room 8,
ReplyDeleteHere's an autumn poem for you all about leaves.
Have a lovely day, from Kate.
How the Leaves Came Down, by Susan Coolidge
“I'll tell you how the leaves came down,"
The great tree to his children said,
"You're getting sleepy, Yellow and Brown,
Yes, very sleepy, little Red.
It is quite time to go to bed."
"Ah!" begged each silly, pouting leaf,
"Let us a little longer stay;
Dear Father Tree, behold our grief;
Tis such a very pleasant day
We do not want to go away."
So, for just one more merry day
To the great tree the leaflets clung,
Frolicked and danced, and had their way,
Upon the autumn breezes swung,
Whispering all their sports among,--
"Perhaps the great tree will forget,
And let us stay until the spring,
If we all beg, and coax, and fret."
But the great tree did no such thing;
He smiled to hear their whispering.
"Come, children, all to bed," he cried;
And ere the leaves could urge their prayer,
He shook his head, and far and wide,
Fluttering and rustling everywhere,
Down sped the leaflets through the air.
I saw them; on the ground they lay,
Golden and red, a huddled swarm,
Waiting till one from far away,
White bedclothes heaped upon her arm,
Should come to wrap them safe and warm.
The great bare tree looked down and smiled,
"Good-night, dear little leaves," he said.
And from below each sleepy child
Replied, "Good-night," and murmured,
"It is so nice to go to bed!”
I think this is absolutely brilliant! I loved it and I think Room 8 is incredibly creative - with a small c as opposed to a George! The Georges are lucky to live in Ashburton where the trees turn red and yellow because in Wellington they don't do that - they just turn grey and drop off - so keep enjoying those brightly coloured leaves and wonderful autumn days!
ReplyDeleteTrees and birds are the best thing ever and you chose a beautiful tree. I'm abit worried about how the Georges got down in one piece but they landed softly - that takes practice!
ReplyDeleteHere's something for Creative George - did you know you can make a lovely bookmark from the leaves?
ReplyDeleteJust press a few leaves between some clear contact paper (or clear duraseal). Depending on the size and shape of your leaves you could have a long bookmark or a wide one.
You could even add a message to it and make it a present for Mum on Mother's Day.
Make sure they are nice and dry though otherwise they go mouldy and your bookmark will go black.
Have heaps of autumn fun!
Wow, it looks like the George Brothers had a lot of fun! Those leaves are such beautiful autumn colours!
ReplyDeleteWow what a great blog post and so many comments. Great work Room 8 I am more than impressesd :)
